Information checklist that will help optimize your structure

 

The following items are some of the things that can help with preliminary discussions on your requirements and how WeatherSolve can assist.


Items in green are particularly helpful.

 
For all situations

Topographical map and site map showing:

  1. North
  2. Contours for at least 1000 ft in every direction from site
  3. Heights of any major buildings or groups of trees nearby
  4. Roadways and access requirements (location, height) around site buildings and other existing structures
  5. Much of the above can be illustrated with a video or still photographs.

    Shots that work best are:
    - From centre looking in each direction of compass
    - Looking at centre, at right angles to prevailing wind

Wind information:
WeatherSolve has wind data for many locations, but local data is generally best.

  • Data giving wind speed, direction and frequency
  • Indicate what averaging period is (eg day, hour, 10 min, 20sec, 3sec),
    Any is OK, 10 min is ideal
  • If data is peak gust (often 3 sec) per day, get daily averages too

Structural Design Information

  1. Applicable building code
  2. Wind Peak 3 sec gust over last 50 years OR Code Design windspeed
  3. Snow Max open field depth
  4. Hail and freezing rain maximum depth
  5. Ground:  choose from: clay (hard/med/soft), packed granular, loose granular, certified fill, loose fill, swamp, OR drill log to approx 20 ft (30 ft if structure likely to be 50 ft or higher)
For stockpile and dust control windbreaks
  1. Location of spots where dust is being blown to
  2. Elevations and plan views of source (eg pile or conveyor)
    show working faces of piles
    show range of pile size
    show range of conveyor travel and material throw
  3. Sieve analysis of source material
    if not available, estimate percentage of material sub 600microns, and sub 200 microns
  4. Specific Gravity and bulk density of material
  5. Angle of repose. (i.e. angle of pile face)
For industrial canopies
  1. Safety: Light and Fire-rating requirements
  2. Protection needed (sun, hail, birds, wind, etc) and what is being protected.
  3. Layout of material and access under canopy
  4. Any aesthetic preferences
For agricultural structures
  1. Plant size and spacings across & down rows
  2. Plan of block showing access ways, headlands, and irrigation main-lines
  3. Dimensions of largest equipment
